Representing the RoGRID Consortium as the National Grid initiative which includes also the following institutions: University "Politehnica" of Bucharest, University of Bucharest, National Institute for R&D in Physics and Nuclear Engineering Bucharest, National Institute for Aerospace Research Bucharest, Institute for Nuclear Research Pitesti, Software Company SIVECO Bucharest.
ICI Bucharest was created in 1970. Since then the institute has been acting as a leading unit in Romanian IT Research and Development. Six Academy awards were granted to the National Institute for R & D in Informatics - ICI people for their results. In 1999, ICI was ranked first among R & D Romanian organizations, in the EC survey "Impact of the enlargement of the European Union towards the associated central and eastern European countries on RTD - innovation and structural policies" (p.194, Office of official publications of the EC, 1999). Since 2000 the institute is certified ISO-9001. Currently the institute is subordinated to the Ministry for Communication and Information Technology.
The institute is located in an eight-store building in a residential area of Bucharest, with an useful surface of about 3,500 square meters.
The professional staff of the institute consists of highly qualified researchers (48), analysts and programmers (80), who are grouped in 4 professional departments. Among them one is member of the Romanian Academy, 20 are Ph.D. holders and 15 are Ph.D. candidates. The main fields of expertise covered by this staff include knowledge engineering, database systems, computer networking, software engineering, quality assurance in IT, business process re-engineering, decision support systems, computer interfaces, computer integrated manufacturing, mathematical modelling, simulation and optimisation, multimedia, web technologies. Also, ICI is National Operator for the Romanian National R&D Computer Network - RNC, where more than 10.000 people from 230 R&D and high level education organizations are registered.
Provided IT Services: advanced and applied research; feasibility and modernization studies; analysis, design, programming and implementation of large-scale information systems for industry, agriculture and public administration; development of general-purpose software tools; delivery of "turnkey" systems upon user requests; consultancy in IT, control and management; training and specialization in IT; software assessment, testing, certification. Two technical journals are issued by the institute: Studies in Computers and Informatics (an international journal) and the Romanian Journal for Informatics and Automation (in Romanian).
International Cooperation: since 1993 ICI has been involved in 38 EU funded projects (Fourth and Fifth Framework Programmes). It is worth noting that export makes about 20% of the institution's turnover, here including the EC research projects and various other contracts outside the EC projects. Since 2002 ICI is coordinating member of the RoGRID Consortium.
